Por qué somos torpes con el inglés y lo hablamos tan mal
Cuando veo la tele en español siento que estoy perdiendo el tiempo e incluso si me gusta el programa lo cambio para ver algo en inglés aunque no me apetezca”. Carolina es una joven de 32 años con estudios universitarios y una necesidad vital de mejorar su inglés para poder optar a un puesto de trabajo acorde con su carrera. Los españoles vivimos estigmatizados con nuestro deficiente control de la lengua inglesa, pero no es tan grave como parece, sino que un conjunto de factores nos han “impedido” aprenderlo. Ahora bien, en los últimos años contamos con multitud de recursos para integrarnos bien en la lengua de Shakespeare, por lo que ya no sirve echar balones fuera.
El complejo de los españoles con el inglés es más fuerte que su conocido “nivel medio”. Eli Brandsaeter, una profesora noruega que lleva 20 años enseñando esta lengua a españoles asegura que “un alemán o un francés no habla mejor inglés que un español” y añade que “tienen un gran complejo de que su nivel no es bueno y no es así. Hay alumnos que tienen muy buen nivel pero creen que es menor y tienen miedo al expresarse”. Esta profesora da clases a personas de entre 20 y 50 años principalmente en empresas, contexto que añade un extra de ansiedad en el turno de la expresión oral.

Pronunciation of "sh"
The “sh” is one of the most common and important phonetic sounds in English. It exists in many other languages as well, but not in all. The Spanish language has no “sh” sound, although certain regional accents sometimes provide a very close equivalent. A good example of this is the Seville accent in Spanish, in which the people often say “shiquillo” in reference to the word “chiquillo”.
The important thing to remember is that the “sh” in English a pronounced very strongly, especially when it falls at the end of the word: wiSH… fiSH… finiSH… poSH.
The following table provides 146 words that start, finish or contain the “sh” sound. Listen to how I pronounce each word and try to copy my pronunciation. I exaggerate the emphasis on the “sh” in each word to help you develop the right pronunciation habits.
